Event of the year, AfrikaBurn was made by participants for the tenth year in 2016. This had also been my very first time at this bespoke event, and there is no way to describe it without using words like “breathtaking”, “mind-altering” and “awe-inspiring”. The most surprising thing to me was just how natural everything felt, and how, for a week, in the middle of nowhere, with dust in every orifice to complement out-of-this-world costumes, including birthday-suits, this was the real world. Another surprising thing was how long it took to adapt to the “default world” again afterwards. What stays behind memories that feel like they are from a dream… and the pictures I took.
These are my favourite images, but I would never be so arrogant as to say that they represent my experience, because they don’t. Nothing can.
