Warning: This gallery is NSFW. My second year attending AfrikaBurn in the Tanqua Karoo, South Africa, in pictures. This year was a strange experience. It was wonderful and introspective and a little sad. Abrahamskraal Family Reunion

I’m very fond of photographing on Abrahamskraal Guest Farm, so when owner-manager Hestie Fourie contacted me about this family reunion/birthday celebration they were hosting at the venue, I was very excited. The clients are South Africans who live in Switzerland, and their daughter turned 13. They took advantage of this to get the entire family together on the farm for a few days of fun in the sun, dust and fresh Karoo air. The Talloires Network is an international association of institutions committed to strengthening the civic roles and social responsibilities of higher education. They are based in Boston, Massachusetts in the USA, and have members and partners across the globe in 77 countries. AfrikaBurn 2016 – Theme “X”

Event of the year, AfrikaBurn was made by participants for the tenth year in 2016. This had also been my very first time at this bespoke event, and there is no way to describe it without using words like “breathtaking”, “mind-altering” and “awe-inspiring”. The most surprising thing to me was just how natural everything felt, and how, for a week, in the middle of nowhere, with dust in every orifice to complement out-of-this-world costumes, including birthday-suits, this was the real world.
