An elderly Balinese woman from the Candi Dasa region, Bali, Indonesia.
In the courtyard of their home, I met this lovely elderly woman. She spoke no English but allowed me to take her portrait.
I was drawn to her because of the way she carried herself. Unassuming, yet steadfast and unfazed by the chaotic goings on around her. She sat by herself, observing the faff and fuss over a boy getting ready to lead a march around the temples in a ceremony in this remote village deep in the jungle. She’d seen this so many times. She had witnessed her own children and grandchildren live through the various stages of their lives, seen the world change around her while for the most part, their village didn’t change at all.
In her eyes, I saw strength and wisdom.
