Set my soul free
2013-2022
This is my visual exploration of the internal landscape of depression, charting the arduous journey from confinement to liberation. Initiated from my own experience, having been unofficially diagnosed at age seven after surviving a severe illness, this long-term project stems from a lifelong struggle to understand the biological, psychological, and social complexities of a condition that was deeply stigmatised during my formative years.
This series moves beyond depicting sadness to give tangible form to the invisible weight of depression. Light and shadow are used as central characters, representing the constant oscillation between despair and hope that defines the healing process.
By externalising this internal struggle, the work seeks to build a bridge of empathy, making a private and often indescribable pain visible to others. The narrative arc is one of reclaimed agency: the conscious, difficult choice to seek a path toward light, meaning, and purpose, even when the way forward is unclear.
Ultimately, this is my testament to resilience. It is a message of hope, asserting that even in the deepest shadows, the potential for liberation persists, and serves as an invitation for viewers to connect with the profoundly human journey of setting one’s own soul free.
